The Power of Intentionality in Transforming Experiences
Have you ever stepped into an event or experience feeling rushed or overwhelmed, only to leave wondering what the point was? What if you flipped that narrative? What if you walked into every situation with clear intentions, fully present and ready to make the most of it? That’s the power of intentionality. It’s the secret ingredient for transforming your experiences, whether personal or professional.
I recently reflected on this during two very different but equally eye-opening events: a massive volleyball tournament with my daughter and the American Association of School Counselors (ASCA) Conference. While the settings couldn’t have been more different, what stood out was how intentionality shaped each experience.
At the volleyball tournament, I focused on being fully present, rooting for my daughter (and embarrassing her, of course, with a giant sign of her face). At the conference, I prioritized two clear goals: learning about accreditation and deepening connections with colleagues. Setting those intentions brought clarity, reduced stress, and created beautiful, lasting memories. (watch the full stories here)
By setting clear intentions, practicing visualization, and grounding yourself in the present, you’ll not only experience greater fulfillment in the moment but also create richer memories that leave a lasting impact.
What Does It Mean to Live Intentionally?
Living with intentionality is about grounding your actions in purpose and clarity. When you have a clear sense of what you want to achieve, both big and small moments take on new meaning. When you align your actions with these clear intentions, you not only maximize the benefits of an event but also bring a sense of peace and focus to potentially overwhelming situations.
Setting Intentions for Meaningful Experiences
Many of us step into experiences blindly, letting the whirlwind of events or external pressures dictate our actions. But by simply pausing to set an intention beforehand, we change the game entirely.
1. Recognize the Value of Intention
A volleyball tournament may seem like an unconventional place to think about intentionality, but the lesson there is universal. Standing in a massive arena, holding up a funny sign featuring your child’s face (and watching them cringe in embarrassment), isn’t just about fun. It’s about fostering connection, laughter, and shared memories.
Similarly, the key to navigating professional spaces, such as the American Association of School Counselors (ASCA) Conference, lies in preparation. When you know what you aim to achieve, you ensure that your effort aligns with your goals. I learned this lesson. Whether I was learning about how to earn RAMP for my school or deepening relationships with colleagues, my pre-determined intentions led the way.
Takeaway: Intention brings purpose to every action, whether it’s personal joy or professional growth.
2. Visualization as a Tool for Focus
One of the best ways to solidify your intention is through visualization. Picture this—you’re headed to an important event, and instead of letting anxiety flood your thoughts, you pause. You visualize yourself walking away from the experience, feeling satisfied. What happened to make it successful? Who did you meet? What actions did you take?
Visualization helps plant a mental roadmap in your mind, guiding your focus toward what truly matters. It’s like setting the GPS of your thoughts, so you don’t get distracted by what doesn’t serve you.
For example, before starting a new school year or entering a conference, you may decide that your intention is to build meaningful connections. Through visualization, you might picture the conversations you’ll have, the networking opportunities you’ll seize, and the sense of fulfillment you’ll feel afterward.
Takeaway: Visualize your success beforehand to guide your decisions and behavior during the event.
3. Turn Intentions into Affirmations
Once your intentions are clear, affirm them to yourself. Affirmations are active, positive statements that keep your focus aligned with your goals. Instead of feeling ambiguous, they translate your intentions into motivating actions.
For example:
“I am present for each moment today.”
“I will meet new people and make meaningful connections.”
“I am prepared to focus on the most important tasks.”
Affirmations are effective because they keep you on track and help drown out external noise. For instance, if you’re at a busy conference, you can remind yourself, “My intention is to gather valuable knowledge and foster relationships.” This grounding thought can help you stay focused on what matters most to you.
Takeaway: Use affirmations to move confidently from planning into action.
Applying Intentionality in Real Time
While setting intentions begins before an event, maintaining them in the moment is equally important. Here are three actionable strategies to help you stay intentional throughout your day-to-day experiences.
1. Ground Yourself with a Midday Check-In
Even with the best intentions, moments of chaos or distraction are inevitable. Whether it’s worries about the future or overthinking something that didn’t go as planned, it’s easy to lose focus. That’s why it’s crucial to pause periodically and ask yourself, “Am I honoring my intentions?”
Recognizing that being off track can be your best opportunity to course-correct. For instance, during the ASCA conference, moments of stress were inevitable. Yet, taking a breather to realign with the two key intentions helped refocus the day.
2. Be Present in the Moment
One of the biggest hurdles to intentional living is our tendency to dwell on the past or worry about the future. But the moments we’re in are fleeting, each one unique and unrepeatable. Focusing your energy on the here and now allows you to fully engage with what’s right in front of you.
Whether it’s watching your daughter’s volleyball match or chatting with a colleague at a conference, don’t rob yourself of these unique moments by being mentally elsewhere.
3. Give Yourself Permission to Live with Flexibility
Intentionality doesn’t mean locking yourself into a rigid plan. Sometimes, the day demands flexibility. Your priorities or goals might shift midstream, and that’s okay. Intentional has nothing to do with perfection. Instead, it’s about staying grounded and making deliberate choices.
For example, while preparing for your next big event, unexpected challenges are likely to arise. Instead of overthinking or stressing, focus on what matters most at that time. Trust that when you’ve set clear intentions, things have a way of working themselves out.
Finding Peace Through Intentionality
At its core, intentional living is about creating peace within yourself. When you’re purposeful in your actions, you eliminate unnecessary stress and self-doubt. You know that even if everything doesn’t go as planned, you’re staying true to what matters most.
Take time to apply intentionality in the small moments, too. Whether it’s your morning workout or an end-of-year reflection, start with a clear purpose. Ask yourself:
What is my goal for this moment?
What would make this experience successful?
What action aligns best with my intention?
Once you take these steps, your intentions will guide you, not just through tasks or events, but through a life that feels meaningful and connected.
Your Call to Action
Now it’s your turn. Think about an upcoming event, task, or even a casual social gathering. Instead of letting anxiety guide you, pause. Consider your intentions, visualize the desired outcome, and affirm the actions you’ll take.
You have the tools to transform every experience—big or small—into something meaningful.
